A companion to Guillaume de Machaut

Multi-disciplinary volume on Machaut published.

[UPDATE Oct 22, 2012: I’ve now produced a pdf version for those of you who want something a bit better looking than the HTML page!]

Musicologist Jennifer Bain and scholar of French literature Deborah McGrady have just published a co-edited volume of essays as A Companion to Guillaume de Machaut. Details are available from the publishers’ website. Looking at the very high price of the volume, I’m glad I got a free one in exchange for my essay (“Poet as Musician”). Typically, the publishers think that my mounting the pdf on my webpage would jeopardize sales, which I find ludicrous: at that price, only libraries are going to buy a book and they would either buy it anyway or not, regardless of whether my chapter is up on my website (and even regardless of whether everyone’s chapters are up on multiple individual websites). I want my work to be read, and because I think people don’t buy books at this price and, increasingly, don’t use books in physical copy in libraries, I am posting a pre-print version of my chapter here in HTML. Please post any comments on this blogpost page. Thanks!

Well, amazon.uk provides copies of the companion at a low price. They’re missing something…?
